Questions, answered plainly.
TuneFirst is a free music social network that runs in your browser: you pick the music you love and meet the people who picked the same. Here are straight answers to what people ask most. Missing one? Ask us.
The basics
What TuneFirst is, what it costs, and where it runs.
What is TuneFirst?
TuneFirst is a music social network. You pick the Tunes, albums and artists you love, and TuneFirst shows you the people who picked the same ones, closest matches first. From there you can talk, make mixtapes together, write reviews, go to shows, and, if you want, date.
Is TuneFirst free?
Yes. TuneFirst is free to use. Every feature described on this site is free.
Is anyone on TuneFirst yet?
Real members, and demo members. TuneFirst is new, and an empty Galaxy shows nothing, so we made demo profiles with their own music, reviews, shows and tapes to show how it looks with a crowd. Every one of them is marked Demo wherever a person is named. There is no real person behind a demo profile: you cannot connect with one or send it a note, and they never appear in dating. Everyone without the label is a real person who signed up, and the screenshots on this site were taken with demo data.
Is there a TuneFirst app?
TuneFirst runs in your web browser, and that is on purpose. Open app.tunefirst.online on a computer, a tablet or your phone: there is nothing to install and your account is the same everywhere.
We built it to be sat down with, like putting a record on: a wide screen for the Galaxy, room to read someone's profile and to write a note that says why. Nothing to swipe, no feed to scroll. Why the browser.
How do I sign up?
Go to app.tunefirst.online and sign in with Google, with Spotify, or with a code sent to your email. A short set of cards then asks a few questions and helps you pick your music. How it works.
Do I need Spotify?
No. You can sign in with Google or email instead, and music search works for everyone. TuneFirst uses Spotify's catalogue and player, so Tunes play through Spotify's embedded player. Connecting your own Spotify account is optional: it lets you export mixtapes as playlists and helps with recommendations.
Do you import my listening history?
No. You choose your Tunes, albums and artists yourself, and matching only uses what you chose. If you connect Spotify, the artists you listen to most help with recommendations on the Music page, nothing more.
How old do I have to be?
18. TuneFirst is for adults: you must be 18 or older to create an account, and that includes dating.
Which languages does TuneFirst speak?
Seven: English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Japanese and Korean. You choose yours when you join and can change it in Settings.
Why does TuneFirst say "Tunes"?
It keeps the focus on music you love rather than items in a catalogue. Everywhere you see "Tunes", read songs.
How is TuneFirst different from Spotify, Last.fm or a dating app?
Spotify is where you listen; TuneFirst is where you meet people through what you listen to, and it uses Spotify's player for playback. Last.fm records what you play automatically; TuneFirst works from the music you choose on purpose. Dating apps usually start with photos and swiping; on TuneFirst dating is optional, and you start with what you share and a written note.
Matching
How people end up close to you.
How does TuneFirst match people?
It compares the Tunes, albums and artists on your profile with everyone else's, and a rare pick you share counts far more than a global hit. Stories count too: if you and someone else wrote a story about the same Tune, album or artist, it adds to your match, whether it is the same memory or a different one. How matching works.
What is the Galaxy?
The Galaxy is the map of your matches. People who share more of your music sit closer to you. Select anyone to see exactly what you share, then connect or open their profile. More on the Galaxy.
How do I get better matches?
Add music that is truly yours, especially lesser-known artists and specific Tunes. Your matches refresh when your music changes.
People and notes
Reaching out, and what happens next.
How do I reach out to someone?
Send a note: a few words, and if you like, a Tune, album, artist or story you share. If they reply, you are connected and a chat opens with your note at the top.
What if they don't reply?
They can let a note go, quietly. Nobody is told no. You can take your request back while it is unanswered.
Can I find people to go to shows with, or to play music with?
Yes. Mark shows as Going to see which of your people are going too, add your music skills to your profile, and search people by city, skills and the music they love. Meeting people.
Mixtapes, reviews and shows
Things to make and do together.
What is a mixtape on TuneFirst?
A mixtape is a playlist you make on purpose, alone or with a friend. You take turns or add freely, add liner notes, and when it is finished you can export it to Spotify or share a link to it. More on mixtapes.
Can I export a mixtape to Spotify?
Yes. Connect your Spotify account in Settings, then export a tape as a playlist in your Spotify account.
Who can read my reviews?
You choose for each review: everyone, your people, or only you. More on reviews.
How do shows work?
TuneFirst lists tour dates for the artists in your collection, everywhere or near your city. Mark a show as Going to see which of your people are going too, and add the night afterwards with a rating, notes, photos and videos. More on shows.
Can I bring in my record collection?
Yes. Connect Discogs and your whole collection comes in, grades and notes included, or import a spreadsheet: Excel or CSV, one record per row, up to 5,000 rows a file, with a template to start from. Your records stand on a shelf by artist, letter by letter, with covers; browse them as a grid or a list, or dig through them crate by crate. Notes, folders and ratings stay only yours.
Who can see my record shelf?
You choose: everyone, your people, or only you, and any single record can be stricter. Your shelf can have its own link at tunefirst.online/your-username/shelf, which anyone can open only when the shelf is set to everyone and your profile is shared outside TuneFirst.
Does a Discogs sync overwrite what I change?
No. A sync adds new records and updates what changed on Discogs, but anything you edited on TuneFirst stays as you left it, and a record you removed never comes back. A record you removed on Discogs is not deleted: it waits for you to keep it or remove it. Disconnecting Discogs keeps your shelf.
Dating
An optional mode, for adults.
Is TuneFirst a dating app?
Not mainly. TuneFirst is for meeting people through music, and dating is one optional mode for adults. It stays off unless you turn it on. How dating works.
Who can see my dating profile?
Only people who are in dating mode too. Your dating profile shows once it is at least 60% complete, and nobody outside dating mode sees it.
Is dating open to everyone?
Dating is open to every TuneFirst member who switches it on, and every member is an adult: you must be 18 or older to create an account.
Privacy and safety
You decide what people see.
Who can see my profile?
You choose, part by part. Your photos and albums, city, age, gender, music, stories, connections, shows, reviews and record shelf can each be for everyone, for your people, or only you, and each photo album can be stricter still. Others only ever see your age, never your birthday. A public link outside TuneFirst is off unless you turn it on.
Do you sell my data?
No. We never sell your data or share it with advertisers. Privacy policy.
How do I block or report someone?
Use the menu on their profile or in a chat. Blocking removes them from your Galaxy, chats, search and notifications, both ways, and ends any connection. Reports are reviewed by people.
Your account
Changing, leaving, getting help.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings, then Leave, then Delete your account, and confirm. It removes your profile, music, reviews, shows, tapes, photos, record shelf and messages for good.
How do I contact TuneFirst?
Use the contact form or write to support@tunefirst.com.
The quickest answer is to try it.
TuneFirst is free and runs in your browser.
